Abstract Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) activates various pathways to induce antinociceptive effects, based on the frequencies used. This study evaluates the preemptive analgesic effects and their duration of low‐ (LT: 4 Hz) and high‐frequency TENS (HT: 100 Hz) using a rat model of acute inflammatory pain. Acute inflammation was induced by injecting 1% formalin into the hind paws of rats. LT or HT was applied for 30 min before formalin injection. Pain‐related behaviors, such as licking, flinching, and lifting, were recorded for 60 min postinjection. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess the number of phosphorylated extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (pERK)‐ and c‐fos‐positive cells in the spinal cord. Naloxone, a μ‐opioid receptors (MORs) antagonist, and naltrindole, a δ‐opioid receptors (DORs) antagonist, were administered before TENS application. Pain behavior duration and pERK‐ and c‐fos‐positive cell expression were then measured. LT and HT pretreatment significantly reduced both pain behaviors and the number of pERK‐ and c‐fos‐positive cells postformalin injection. Naloxone and naltrindole partially reversed the effects of LT and HT, respectively. Notably, HT's analgesic effect lasted up to 120 min whereas that of LT persisted for 90 min. LT and HT effectively exerted their preemptive analgesic effects on acute inflammatory pain by inhibiting pERK and c‐fos expression in the spinal cord. HT presented a longer‐lasting effect compared to LT. MOR and DOR activation may contribute to LT and HT's analgesic mechanisms, respectively.

There is a lack of consensus regarding effective management.Methods: We used Arksey and O’Malley’s five-step method to identify, collate, and evaluate literature published between 2010 and 2023. The scoping review investigated the efficacy or effectiveness of interventions in the management of LPV. The aim of this paper is to map the literature on the efficacy or effectiveness of physical interventions.Results: The review produced 19 primary studies of physical interventions for LPV. These include acupuncture, laser therapy, physiotherapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, low-intensity shockwave therapy, transcranial direct current stimulation, and vestibulectomy.Conclusion: Published studies that investigated a range of physical treatments for LPV showed some positive effects, except for transcranial direct-current stimulation. The remaining modalities demonstrated improved sexual pain and treatment satisfaction, when measured. Findings were mixed for non-sexual pain. There was insufficient evidence to draw conclusions regarding other outcomes. Introduction Träbert current (TC) is a physical therapy resource described for the management of musculoskeletal pain (MSP). It combines the effects of galvanism and sensory stimulation, offering various analgesic applications, although it seems that the studies that support its effectiveness are limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of TC in a physical therapy plan for the management of MSP. Methods Electronic databases reviewed included Medline (via PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, Science Direct, and PEDro (last updated January 12, 2024). Randomised clinical trials (RCTs) comparing TC with other physical therapy interventions were included. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were analysed qualitatively, while five contributed to the meta-analysis. The clinical conditions treated included knee osteoarthritis, low back pain (LBP), and epicondylalgia. The risk of bias and internal validity was evaluated using the Rob2 tool (Cochrane) and the PEDro scale. Results RCTs were rated as having favourable internal validity (PEDro), despite a lack of concealed allocation and blinding, resulting in an unclear risk of bias on D2 and D5 (Rob2). The studies reported a decrease in pain and disability for the experimental groups ( p < 0.05), although the meta-analysis revealed a non-significant pooled effect for the standardised mean difference (SMD = 0.2–0.5, p > 0.05) in favour of the controls and with heterogeneity between the studies (I 2 = 50–75%). Conclusions TC seems to be effective for the management of MSP, although it is necessary to improve the quality of the clinical trials to conduct a conclusive quantitative analysis. Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy on pain during the debonding procedure. Methods: A placebo-controlled, randomized split - mouth study was conducted on 30 orthodontic patients. The right and left anterior teeth in the maxilla and mandible were randomly allocated to the control and experimental groups (EG) and were stimulated. TENS application was made through a modified electrode probe that was used from an ammeter. The control group (CG) received the mechanical application of the device with no current, whereas the EG received progressively increasing current from 0.1 mA to the point where the patient experienced a mild tingling sensation for 60 s for each tooth. This was followed by a debonding procedure using an orthodontic debonding plier. Pain perception was recorded on a numerical rating scale after debonding each tooth. Results: The mean pain score was higher in the CG than in the EG, and the difference between the two groups was significant (p=0.001). The pain score was higher in the mandibular teeth than in the maxillary teeth, and the difference between the two groups was also significant (p=0.021). Pain score was higher in female subjects than in male subjects, and the difference between the two groups was significant (p=0.015). Conclusion: The application of TENS therapy results in pain reduction during the debonding procedure. The female subjects experienced more pain. Higher pain scores were recorded for the mandibular anterior teeth than for the maxillary teeth.

The aim of this study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of patient-controlled TEAS (PC-TEAS) for relieving CIBP in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods/Design: This is a study protocol for a prospective, triple-blind, randomized controlled trial. We anticipate enrolling 188 participants with NSCLC bone metastases who are also using potent opioid analgesics from 4 Chinese medical centers. These participants will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the true PC-TEAS or the sham PC-TEAS group. All participants will receive standard adjuvant oncology therapy. The true group will undergo patient-controlled TEAS intervention as needed, while the sham group will follow the same treatment schedule but with non-conductive gel patches. Each treatment course will span 7 days, with a total of 4 courses administered. There will be 4 assessment time points: baseline, the conclusion of weeks 4, 8, and 12. The primary outcome of this investigation is the response rate of the average pain on the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) scale at week 4 after treatment. Secondary outcomes include pain related indicators, quality of life scale, mood scales, and routine blood counts on the assessment days. Any adverse events will be promptly addressed and reported if they occur. We will manage trial data using the EDC platform, with a data monitoring committee providing regular quality oversight.Discussion: PC-TEAS interventions offer an attempt to achieve home-based acupuncture treatment and the feasibility of achieving triple blinding in acupuncture research. Objective: This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of repetitive finger stimulation on brain activation in eight stroke and seven control subjects, measured by quantitative electroencephalogram. Methods: We applied 5 mins of 2-Hz repetitive bilateral index finger transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and compared differences pre- and post-transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation using quantitative electroencephalogram metrics delta/alpha ratio and delta-theta/alpha-beta ratio. Results: Between-group differences before and after stimulation were significantly different in the delta/alpha ratio (z = -2.88, P = 0.0040) and the delta-theta/alpha-beta ratio variables (z = -3.90 with P < 0.0001). Significant decrease in the delta/alpha ratio and deltatheta/alpha-beta ratio variables after the transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation was detected only in the stroke group (delta/alpha ratio diff = 3.87, P = 0.0211) (delta-theta/alpha-beta ratio diff = 1.19, P = 0.0074). Conclusions: The decrease in quantitative electroencephalogrammetrics in the stroke group may indicate improved brain activity after transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. This finding may pave the way for a future novel therapy based on transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and quantitative electroencephalogram measures to improve brain recovery after stroke. Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) require more time to develop motor and/or cognitive skills. Neuromodulation is used to assist in this development. However, there is a gap in the literature on neurophysiological changes that may occur in the primary motor cortex in individuals with DS following neuromodulation. Our objective was to investigate possible neurophysiological changes in brain wave behavior of the primary motor cortex following the administration of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation combined with sensorimotor training. The study involved 12 participants with DS. EEG equipment was used to investigate brain activity. The participants received neuromodulation involving anodal tDCS for 20 minutes with a current of 1 mA combined with virtual reality (VR) training three times a week for a total of ten sessions. We analyzed EGG signals and 3D movement during a reaching movement of the dominant upper limb before and after the ten-session protocol. Significant differences in event-related desynchronization and event-related synchronization of the alpha and beta rhythms were found throughout the evaluations. Brain mapping revealed reductions in power and frequency, demonstrating changes in the patterns of these rhythms in the cerebral cortex. Revealed reorganization of the behavior of alpha and beta waves, as demonstrated by distribution of synchronization and desynchronization of these waves among the regions of the brain. The results suggest that anodal tDCS promotes the reorganization of brain impulses, redirecting these impulses to the required regions more efficiently and contributing to better motor planning. • Conduction velocities of somatosensory pathway were experimentally determined in patients with succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD), an inherited disorder of GABA metabolism. • Somatosensory latencies were delayed in SSADHD patients compared with healthy and disease controls. • The findings support the hypotheses that myelin sheath thickness is reduced in SSADHD. Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD) is a genetic disorder resulting in abnormal regulation of γ-aminobutyric acid, lipid metabolism, and myelin biogenesis, leading to ataxia, seizures, and cognitive impairment. Since the myelin sheath is thinner in a murine model of SSADHD compared to a wild type, we hypothesized that this also holds for human brain. We tested whether the conduction velocity in the somatosensory pathway is accordingly delayed. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEF) produced by transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the median nerve were measured in 13 SSADHD patients, 11 healthy and 14 disease controls with focal epilepsy. The peak latencies of the initial four components (M1, M2, M3 and M4) were measured. The SEF waveforms and scalp topographies were comparable across the groups. The latencies were statistically significantly longer in the SSADHD group compared to the two controls. We found these latencies for the SSADHD, healthy and disease controls respectively to be: M1: (21.9 ± 0.8 ms [mean ± standard error of the mean], 20.4 ± 0.6 ms, and 21.0 ± 0.4 ms) (p < 0.05); M2: (36.1 ± 1.0 ms, 33.1 ± 0.6 ms, and 32.1 ± 1.1 ms) (p < 0.005); M3: (62.5 ± 2.4 ms, 54.7 ± 2.0 ms, and 49.9 ± 1.8 ms) (p < 0.005); M4: (86.2 ± 2.3 ms, 78.8 ± 2.8 ms, and 73.5 ± 2.9 ms) (p < 0.005). The SEF latencies are delayed in patients with SSADHD compared with healthy controls and disease controls. This is the first study that compares conduction velocities in the somatosensory pathway in SSADHD, an inherited disorder of GABA metabolism. Background: Few reviews have addressed delirium prevention among intermediate to high‐risk older surgical patients. Aims: To map preoperative delirium prevention interventions for older surgical patients at intermediate to high risk of developing delirium, assess outcomes and identify gaps in knowledge. Design: Systematic narrative review of randomised controlled trials reported following the PRISMA checklist. Methods: A systematic search was conducted of the literature published from 1990 to October 2022 in Medline, CINAHL and Ageline and of the grey literature in Google Scholar. Randomised controlled trials were retrieved that assessed the effectiveness of preoperative delirium prevention interventions for older surgical patients at intermediate to high risk of delirium. Data were extracted using a data extraction tool, and results were tabulated. Studies were assessed for bias using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias tool. Results: Twenty‐one studies met the selection criteria including N = 5096 participants. Two studies tested cognitive training, two studies tested fascia iliaca compartment block and one study assessed femoral nerve block. Ten studies tested prophylactic medications including methylprednisolone. Five studies investigated geriatric assessment and management. One study assessed transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation. In the two studies testing fascia iliaca compartment block, there was a reduction in postoperative delirium for orthopaedic patients. Methylprednisolone reduced postoperative delirium in orthopaedic patients and in those undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. Results of all other interventions on the occurrence of postoperative delirium and additional outcomes including the severity and duration of delirium were inconclusive. Conclusions: Despite the promising results for fascia iliaca compartment block and methylprednisolone, there is limited knowledge regarding evidence‐based delirium prevention interventions. Most studies had small sample sizes indicating that the current evidence is exploratory. There is an urgent need for the funding and conduct of trials to test preventative interventions for older surgical patients at intermediate to high risk of developing delirium. Background: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), if severe, is usually treated with stimulant or non-stimulant medication. However, users prefer non-drug treatments due to side effects. Alternative non-medication treatments have so far only shown modest effects. External trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) is a minimal risk, non-invasive neuromodulation device, targeting the trigeminal system. It was approved for ADHD in 2019 by the USA Food and Drug administration (FDA) based on a small proof of concept randomised controlled trial (RCT) in 62 children with ADHD showing improvement of ADHD symptoms after 4 weeks of nightly real versus sham eTNS with minimal side effects. We present here the protocol of a larger confirmatory phase IIb study testing efficacy, longer-term persistency of effects and underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: A confirmatory, sham-controlled, double-blind, parallel-arm, multi-centre phase IIb RCT of 4 weeks of eTNS in 150 youth with ADHD, recruited in London, Portsmouth, and Southampton, UK. Youth with ADHD will be randomized to either real or sham eTNS, applied nightly for 4 weeks. Primary outcome is the change in the investigator-administered parent rated ADHD rating scale. Secondary outcomes are other clinical and cognitive measures, objective hyperactivity and pupillometry measures, side effects, and maintenance of effects over 6 months. The mechanisms of action will be tested in a subgroup of 56 participants using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after the 4-week treatment. Discussion: This multi-centre phase IIb RCT will confirm whether eTNS is effective in a larger age range of children and adolescents with ADHD, whether it improves cognition and other clinical measures, whether efficacy persists at 6 months and it will test underlying brain mechanisms. The results will establish whether eTNS is effective and safe as a novel non-pharmacological treatment for ADHD. Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a set of symptoms that negatively affect the daily life activities of the individual, leading to functional disability and significant loss of labor, especially in young adults. PFPS is usually due to weakness of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) resulting in abnormal patellar tracking and pain. Our study aims to compare the efficacy of high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) on pain and lower extremity function in the treatment of PFPS with different electrophysical agents (EPAs). The study was designed as a single-blind randomized controlled trial. Forty-five people with PFPS (aged 25–45 years) were included in the study. The patients were randomly divided into three groups and a total of ten sessions of treatment were administered to all three groups for 2 weeks, 5 days a week. High-intensity laser (HILT) and exercise program were applied to group 1. Ultrasound (US), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and exercise program were applied to group 2. In group 3, US, interferential current (IFC), and exercise program were applied. Both groups underwent three evaluations: pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 12 weeks after treatment. Outcome measures included the visual analog scale for pain severity (VAS), knee flexion range of motion (FROM), Q angle, pain threshold, muscle strength of quadriceps and hamstring, Kujala patellofemoral scoring, lower extremity functional scale (LEFS), and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). The ANOVA was used for comparing the data of the groups, and two-way repeated measure ANOVA was used to compare at the pre-post and post-intervention 3rd month. The LSD and Bonferroni post hoc tests were also used to identify the between-group differences. Groups 2 and 3 were statistically effective in pain and functionality (p < 0.05). Group 1 was found to be statistically more effective than other groups in reducing pain (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.000/0.000; p = 0.000), increasing knee flexion angle (95% CI, 127.524/135.809; p = 0.000), and increasing lower extremity function (95% CI, 75.970/79.362; p = 0.000). This study indicated that high-intensity laser therapy was found to be a more effective method in the treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome after 3 months of follow-up compared to US-TENS combination and US-interferential current combination treatments. Also, HILT can be used as an effective method in combination with an appropriate exercise program including vastus medialis strengthening to reduce pain and increase functionality in the patients with PFPS. Objective: Six months after the onset of stroke, over 60% of patients experience upper limb dysfunction, with spasticity being a major contributor alongside muscle weakness. This study investigated the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with taping on wrist spasticity, strength, and upper extremity function in patients with stroke. Methods: In total, 40 patients with stroke were included and randomly divided into two groups: the TENS + taping (n = 20, age 52.4 ± 9.3 (range: 39 to 70)) and TENS (n = 20, age 53.5 ± 10.8 (range: 39 to 74)) groups. All subjects performed 30 sessions of task-related training, which included 10 min of postural control training and 20 min of task performance. Additionally, all subjects received TENS on the spastic muscle belly for 30 min before task-related training. In the TENS + taping group, taping was additionally applied to the forearm and wrist but not in the TENS group. The Modified Ashworth Scale was used to measure spasticity, and a handheld dynamometer was used to measure muscle strength. The Fugl–Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity was used to evaluate the functional ability of the upper extremity. Results: In the TENS + taping group, spasticity and upper extremity function were significantly improved as compared to those in the TENS group (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference in muscle strength was observed between the two groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the combination of TENS and taping for spasticity and function of the upper extremity was more effective in relieving the spasticity than TENS alone. Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a significant public health problem, is very prevalent, and is often characterized by the persistence of symptoms. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may benefit people with chronic LBP because it can activate descending inhibitory pathways and inhibit central excitability. However, previous studies that have investigated the effects of TENS on pain in people with LBP have failed to use proper intensities of current, and the timing of the assessment of pain was not performed during the peak of the analgesic response or functional activities. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the effects of TENS on measures of pain, function, and descending inhibition using the maximal tolerable intensity of TENS in participants with LBP. Methods/design: This study will be a randomized crossover trial. The participants for this study will be recruited from various places, including the University of Hartford, physical therapy clinics, and local businesses in the Hartford area, as well as online websites geared towards clinical trial recruitment. A total of 34 participants will receive all three treatments: active TENS, placebo TENS, and no treatment control. The treatment order will be randomized using a website-based randomization tool. For active TENS, a modulating frequency of 2–125 Hz will be applied with a variable pulse duration and maximal tolerable intensity for 30 min. The TENS will be left on for post-treatment testing to assess the effects during its maximally effective period for a total of 50 to 60 min. Furthermore, the intensity may be turned down if muscle twitching is present to ensure blinding of the evaluator. For placebo TENS, the unit will deliver current for 45 s, ramping to 0 in the last 15 s. The primary outcome will be pain intensity at rest and with movement, determined using the numerical pain rating scale. The secondary outcomes will be pressure pain threshold, heat pain threshold, temporal summation of pain, conditioned pain modulation, sit-to-stand test, and repeated trunk flexion. The assessments will be performed immediately before and after treatment. Statistical analysis of the data obtained will consider a significance level of p < 0.05. Discussion: This study will provide evidence concerning the effects and mechanisms of TENS treatment in participants with chronic non-specific low back pain. The outcomes, including pain, function, and descending inhibition, will help us gain a greater understanding of how TENS can be used for these participants. This narrative review explores the importance of multimodal pain management options for postoperative cardiac surgery, focusing on maximizing pain alleviation while minimizing opioids usage and adverse consequences. It examines various pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques, including opioids, NSAIDs, acetaminophen, gabapentinoids, alpha-2 agonists, local anesthetics, and ketamine, to maximize pain relief and improve patient outcomes. The review emphasizes the significance of a multimodal approach, combining different agents for better pain relief and patient outcomes. Non-pharmacological treatments, such as progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises, distraction techniques, massage therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), also play a role in pain management, promoting comprehensive patient comfort and well-being. These methods are helpful additions to existing pharmaceutical therapies and promote comprehensive patient comfort. The aim of this interventional non-randomised prospective controlled study was to assess the effectiveness of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) in human subjects with tinnitus. The ParasymTM tVNS device was paired with an auditory stimulation. Treatment and observations were conducted over 12 weeks. Audiological evaluation was performed. Responses from a set of questionnaires and quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) before and after treatment were collected. Voice measurements were done to assess possible side-effects of tVNS. The study involved 29 adults who had chronic tinnitus (15 patients who underwent tVNS paired with sounds and a control group of 14 patients who did not). In general, subjective and objective measurements of tinnitus showed no improvement in the study group compared to the controls, although certain parameters as gauged by the questionnaires did statistically improve. The loudness and frequency of tinnitus remained the same in both groups. For the qEEG, activity in the theta band increased significantly in the study group compared to the control group. The tVNS was not effective in reducing tinnitus symptoms in our study group. The vagus nerve is thought to be involved in the allostatic regulation of motivation and energy metabolism via gut‐brain interactions. A recent study by Neuser and colleagues (2020) provided novel evidence for this process in humans, by reporting a positive effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on the invigoration of reward‐seeking behaviors, especially for food rewards. We conducted an independent direct replication of Neuser et al. (2020), to assess the robustness of their findings. Following the original study, we used a single‐blind, sham‐controlled, randomized cross‐over design. We applied left‐sided taVNS in healthy human volunteers (n = 40), while they performed an effort allocation task in which they had to work for monetary and food rewards. The replication study was purely confirmatory in that it strictly followed the analysis plans and scripts used by Neuser et al. Although, in line with Neuser et al., we found strong effects of task variables on effort invigoration and effort maintenance, we failed to replicate their key finding: taVNS did not increase the strength of invigoration (p =.62); the data were five times more likely (BF10 = 0.19) under the null hypothesis. We also found substantial evidence against an effect of taVNS on effort maintenance (p =.50; BF10 = 0.20). Our results provide evidence against the idea that left‐sided taVNS boosts the motivational drive to work for rewards. Our study also highlights the need for direct replications of influential taVNS studies. We were not able to replicate a study by Neuser et al. (2020, Nature Communications), which found a positive effect of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation on individuals' motivation to work for monetary and food rewards. Based on these, TDPM and JPS using image capture were performed. In physiotherapeuticdiagnosis, proprioceptive impairments in the hip and knee joints were the primary functional impairments related to balance and gait. Background: The purpose of the present study was to systematically delve into the efficacy and safety of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on the quality of recovery after general anesthesia. Methods: Randomized controlled trials related to TEAS improving postoperative recovery quality were searched in Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang and Chinese biomedical database from the inception of each database to June 2023. After literature screening and data extraction, Stata15 software was employed for meta-analysis, and the quality of the included literature was evaluated utilizing ROB2. Results: The study included 10 articles involving 2,383 patients in total. The meta-analysis results unveiled that TEAS could improve 24-hour and 48-hour postoperative QoR-40 scores as well as 24-hour postoperative QoR-40 dimension scores [WMD = 8.52, 95%CI (5.12, 11.91), P < 0.001; WMD = 1.99, 95%CI (0.91, 3.07), P < 0.001], emotional state [WMD = 1.38, 95%CI (0.66, 2.09), P < 0.001], physical comfort [WMD = 2.99, 95%CI (1.59, 4.39), P < 0.001], psychological support [WMD = 0.63, 95%CI (0.36, 0.90), P < 0.001], and physical independence [WMD = 0.76, 95%CI (0.22, 1.30), P = 0.006]; pain [WMD = 1.81, 95%CI (0.87, 2.75), P < 0.001]; decrease 24-hour postoperative VAS pain scores [WMD = -0.84, 95%CI (-1.45, -0.23), P = 0.007] and the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting [RR = 0.88, 95%CI (0.81, 0.97), P = 0.006; RR = 0.62, 95%CI (0.52, 0.73), P < 0.001]. Survival requires the integration of external information and interoceptive cues to effectively guide advantageous behaviors, particularly foraging and other behaviors that promote energy acquisition and consumption. The vagus nerve acts as a critical relay between the abdominal viscera and the brain to convey metabolic signals. This review synthesizes recent findings from rodent models and humans revealing the impact of vagus nerve signaling from the gut on the control of higher-order neurocognitive domains, including anxiety, depression, reward motivation, and learning and memory. We propose a framework where meal consumption engages gastrointestinal tract-originating vagal afferent signaling that functions to alleviate anxiety and depressive-like states, while also promoting motivational and memory functions. These concurrent processes serve to favor the encoding of meal-relevant information into memory storage, thus facilitating future foraging behaviors. Modulation of these neurocognitive domains by vagal tone is also discussed in the context of pathological conditions, including the use of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and dementia-associated memory impairments. Collectively, these findings highlight the contributions of gastrointestinal vagus nerve signaling to the regulation of neurocognitive processes that shape various adaptive behavioral responses. Objective: The aim of the study is to identify and appraise current evidence for rehabilitation interventions in head and neck cancer. Design: A previously published scoping review spanning 1990 through April 2017 was updated through January 11, 2023 and narrowed to include only interventional studies (Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2019;100(12):2381–2388). Included studies had a majority head and neck cancer population and rehabilitation-specific interventions. Pairs of authors extracted data and evaluated study quality using the PEDro tool. Results were organized by intervention type. Results: Of 1338 unique citations, 83 studies with 87 citations met inclusion criteria. The median study sample size was 49 (range = 9–399). The most common interventions focused on swallow (16 studies), jaw (11), or both (6), followed by whole-body exercise (14) and voice (10). Most interventions took place in the outpatient setting (77) and were restorative in intent (65 articles). The overall study quality was fair (median PEDro score 5, range 0–8); none were of excellent quality (PEDro >9). Conclusions: Most head and neck cancer rehabilitation interventions have focused on restorative swallow and jaw exercises and whole-body exercise to address dysphagia, trismus, and deconditioning. More high-quality evidence for head and neck cancer rehabilitation interventions that address a wider range of impairments and activity and social participation limitations during various cancer care phases is urgently needed to reduce head and neck cancer-associated morbidity. The bone turnover is important for the progression of osteoarthritis. The C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, β-CrossLaps (β-CTx) is considered as the first-choice bone resorption markers. Today, the biochemical markers have been associated with pain and disease severity in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients. We studied the association between β-CTx and functional status in KOA patients, pre- and postrehabilitation program. The primary goals of our study are both to establish the correlation between the serum level of β-CTx and other parameters of clinical and functional status in KOA patients and to compare the CTX-I values before and after rehabilitation program. We respected the actual international management recommendations for KOA. A total of 130 patients were randomly allocated into two distinct groups: Study Group (SG = 90 patients) performed 10 sessions of complete rehabilitation program (magnetodiaflux, transcutaneous nerve stimulation, ultrasound and low intensity laser treatment, kinetic measures), and Control Group (CG = 40 patients) performed 10 sessions of kinetic program. Both programs were performed daily, 5 days/week, 2 weeks. Evaluation of patients was carried out in two stages - initial (T1) and after 3 months (T2). Comparing the initial values with the final ones for β-CTx, we noticed a high significant difference between initial and final values only in SG patients. For the both T1 and T2 moments, there was no a statistically significant difference between β-CTx values from the two groups. Analyzing the differences between the values of clinical parameters (Six Minutes Walking Test, Timed Up-and-Go test, walk cadence and Symmetry index in walk) obtained between the patients from the two groups, we noticed that, for the T2 moment, there was a statistically significant difference between studied parameters, except walk cadence. In the assessment of global KOA patient status (clinical and functional status in accordance with bone-cartilage interface dynamics), β-CTx has significant value and could be used for monitoring the individualized rehabilitation program. Introduction: Ledderhose disease (LD), a rare and benign pathology, manifests in the thickening of the plantar aponeurosis, leading to the development of nodules on the plantar surfaces. First stages typically feature painless nodules, but progression may result in discomfort or pain attributed to inflammatory and irritating processes. Also known as plantar fibromatosis (PF), this condition is part of a spectrum of pathologies characterized by hyperproliferation of fibrous connective tissue, similar to Dupuytren contracture (palmar fibromatosis). Given that this pathology is relatively unknown but potentially disabling, we consider it important to review this condition in order to manage possible complications and to expand the rehabilitation treatment, currently limited to a few physiotherapy procedures. Materials and methods: This paper presents the case of a 66-year-old patient known to have Ledderhose disease diagnosed in 2003, Dupuytren contracture of bilateral hands, osteopenia, invasive ductal carcinoma surgically treated and followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy (2018). The patient presented to our clinic complaining of bilateral plantar pain, with the left side exhibiting greater severity, accompanied by paresthesia in a sock-like distribution and difficulty with ambulation. On clinical examination, bilateral flatfoot deformity, stage 1 Dupuytren contracture of the bilateral palmar aponeurosis, mildly reduced distal muscle strength in both upper and lower extremities and plantar synovial cysts were noted, findings that were subsequently confirmed via MRI imaging. The physiotherapeutic plan was designed to reduce symptomatic manifestations, attenuate the inflammatory cascade and optimize gait pattern. However, considering the patient's medical history, we were limited in prescribing physiotherapy procedures. The patient was dynamically evaluated using the following scales: Visual analogue scale (VAS), Life Quality Assessment (QOL), The Functional Ambulation Categories (FAC), Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Medical Research Council Scale for muscle strength (MRC). Results: Considering the associated oncological pathology, our ability to prescribe physiotherapy procedures was constrained. However, the patient benefited from an individualized rehabilitation program specific to the pathology with a favorable evolution and a promising prognosis. The program included physical therapy sessions targeting stretching, toning and enhancing muscle strength for the plantar and palmar muscle groups, alongside paraffin applications, low-frequency current (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation - TENS) and Deep oscillation applications. Conclusions: The complex rehabilitation approach in a patient with a rare medical condition, complicated with degenerative diseases, though limited in variety due to associated oncological pathology contributed in the end to a significant improvement of the patient's quality of life. Introduction and hypothesis: The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) on quality of life (QoL) and clinical parameters related to incontinence in pharmacological agents (PhAs) naive and refractory women with idiopathic overactive bladder (iOAB). Methods: In this prospective nonrandomized clinical trial, women with resistance to PhAs were included in the first group (n=21), PhA-naive women were included in the second group (n=21). TTNS was performed 2 days a week, a total of 12 sessions for 6 weeks. Every session lasted 30 min. Women were evaluated for the severity of incontinence (Pad test), 3-day voiding diary (voiding frequency, nocturia, incontinence episodes, and number of pads), symptom severity (Overactive Bladder Questionnaire-V8), quality of life (Incontinence Impact Questionnaire-7), treatment satisfaction, positive response, and cure-improvement rates. Results: A statistically significant improvement was found in all parameters for each group at the 6th week compared with the baseline values (p<0.05). It was found that the severity of incontinence, incontinence episodes, symptom severity, treatment satisfaction, and QoL parameters were significantly improved in PhA-naive group compared with the PhA-resistant group at the 6th week (p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of voiding, nocturia, and number of pads between the two groups (p>0.05). Positive response rates, the primary outcome measure, were statistically significantly higher in the PhA-naive group than in the PhA-resistant group. Conclusions: Although TTNS is more effective in PhA-naive women with iOAB, it appears to be an effective therapy that can also be used in the management of PhA-resistant women with iOAB. Introduction: Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMDs) are considered multifactorial, and several treatment approaches have been proposed for their effective management. The use of non invasive treatment modalities is recommended, which includes Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), acupuncture, ultrasound, and manual therapies. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of TENS, LLLT, and ultrasound therapy in patients suffering from TMDs. Materials and Methods: This prospective, randomised clinical trial was conducted on thirty patients (11 males, 19 females) clinically diagnosed with TMD associated with Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) pain, clicking joint sound, pain in the muscles of mastication, and limited mouth opening. Patients were sequentially randomised into three groups to be treated with TENS, laser beam, and ultrasound therapies, respectively. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Score and painfree mouth opening were recorded before, during, and after treatment. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) version 16.0 statistical software. Statistical tests such as the paired sample t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and post-hoc Tukey test were performed. Results: There was a significant reduction in the VAS score in the TENS group (3.15), LLLT group (5.75), and ultrasound group (5.50) post-treatment (p<0.001). In addition, improvements in Mean Mouth Opening (MMO) levels were observed with TENS (7.80 mm), LLLT (9.09 mm), and ultrasound therapy (7.15 mm). These differences were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The laser and ultrasound groups fared better than the TENS group in the reduction of VAS scores (p<0.05), and there was no significant difference in MMO among the three therapies. Conclusion: Reductions in VAS scores and improvements in mouth opening were noticed in all three groups post-treatment. The laser and ultrasound therapies were more effective in reducing pain compared to TENS therapy. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of progressive relaxation exercises (PRE) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation administered to women delivering via cesarean delivery on acute pain, breastfeeding success, and comfort levels. Methods: This is a single‐blind, randomized controlled study. This study was carried out in the obstetrics and gynecology clinic of a university hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health in Turkey between August 20, 2018 and April 15, 2019. A total of 120 participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups, which included a transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS) group, a PRE group, a combined intervention group, and a control group. Data were collected with a Data Collection Form, The Visual Analogue Scale, The LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic Tool, and The Postpartum Comfort Scale. Results: According to the findings of the study, it was determined that pain significantly decreased and comfort increased after having a cesarean delivery in all three intervention groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Regarding the breastfeeding success, while there was no statistically significant change in this behavior in the TENS group, it was significantly better in the PRE group and the combined intervention group, where TENS and PRE were administered together (p < 0.05). Conclusions: According to our study results, we recommend that TENS and PRE should be employed together after a cesarean delivery as safe non‐pharmacological methods in pain management, eliminating breastfeeding problems, and increasing comfort. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) activates various pathways to induce antinociceptive effects, based on the frequencies used. This study evaluates the preemptive analgesic effects and their duration of low‐ (LT: 4 Hz) and high‐frequency TENS (HT: 100 Hz) using a rat model of acute inflammatory pain. Acute inflammation was induced by injecting 1% formalin into the hind paws of rats. LT or HT was applied for 30 min before formalin injection. Pain‐related behaviors, such as licking, flinching, and lifting, were recorded for 60 min postinjection. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess the number of phosphorylated extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (pERK)‐ and c‐fos‐positive cells in the spinal cord. Naloxone, a μ‐opioid receptors (MORs) antagonist, and naltrindole, a δ‐opioid receptors (DORs) antagonist, were administered before TENS application. Pain behavior duration and pERK‐ and c‐fos‐positive cell expression were then measured. LT and HT pretreatment significantly reduced both pain behaviors and the number of pERK‐ and c‐fos‐positive cells postformalin injection. Naloxone and naltrindole partially reversed the effects of LT and HT, respectively. Notably, HT's analgesic effect lasted up to 120 min whereas that of LT persisted for 90 min. LT and HT effectively exerted their preemptive analgesic effects on acute inflammatory pain by inhibiting pERK and c‐fos expression in the spinal cord. Background: Advanced prosthetic hands may embed nanosensors and microelectronics in their cosmetic skin. Heat influx may cause damage to these delicate structures. Protecting the integrity of the prosthetic hand becomes critical and necessary to ensure sustainable function. This study aims to mimic the sensorimotor control strategy of the human hand in perceiving nociceptive stimuli and triggering self-protective mechanisms and to investigate how similar neuromorphic mechanisms implemented in prosthetic hand can allow amputees to both volitionally release a hot object upon a nociceptive warning and achieve reinforced release via a bionic withdrawal reflex. Methods: A steady-state temperature prediction algorithm was proposed to shorten the long response time of a thermosensitive temperature sensor. A hybrid sensory strategy for transmitting force and a nociceptive temperature warning using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on evoked tactile sensations was designed to reconstruct the nociceptive sensory loop for amputees. A bionic withdrawal reflex using neuromorphic muscle control technology was used so that the prosthetic hand reflexively opened when a harmful temperature was detected. Four able-bodied subjects and two forearm amputees randomly grasped a tube at the different temperatures based on these strategies. Results: The average prediction error of temperature prediction algorithm was 8.30 ± 6.00%. The average success rate of six subjects in perceiving force and nociceptive temperature warnings was 86.90 and 94.30%, respectively. Under the reinforcement control mode in Test 2, the median reaction time of all subjects was 1.39 s, which was significantly faster than the median reaction time of 1.93 s in Test 1, in which two able-bodied subjects and two amputees participated. Results demonstrated the effectiveness of the integration of nociceptive sensory strategy and withdrawal reflex control strategy in a closed loop and also showed that amputees restored the warning of nociceptive sensation while also being able to withdraw from thermal danger through both voluntary and reflexive protection. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that it is feasible to restore the sensorimotor ability of amputees to warn and react against thermal nociceptive stimuli. Results further showed that the voluntary release and withdrawal reflex can work together to reinforce heat protection. Background: Low back pain is a significant contributor to global disability, impacting individuals across different age groups. Patients and Methods: 75 patients who were diagnosed with chronic low back pain, ages 20-50, participated. They were divided into three groups: group A received shortwave with exercise, group B received TENS with exercise, and group C received just exercise. Treatment was given for 12 sessions over a period of 4 weeks. All patients were evaluated before and after treatment using a visual analog scale and the Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire. Results: The results showed that all three interventions were effective in reducing pain and improving physical activities, with varying degrees of success. But also, the result showed that the mean difference for the short wave with exercise is much higher than both the TENS with exercise and the exercise alone types of interventions in each of the different categories, respectively. This article compares two forms of electrical stimulation therapy, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and H-Wave® Device Stimulation (HWDS), for managing chronic musculoskeletal pain. TENS and HWDS have different technical parameters and applications, with HWDS providing longer-term pain relief and other therapeutic benefits. HWDS has received more FDA clearances for pain and neuromuscular conditions compared to TENS. Studies show mixed results for TENS, with some showing no improvement in pain scores and others showing slight short-term improvement in functional disability. In contrast, studies consistently demonstrate significant pain reduction, improved function, and overall quality of life with HWDS. Further research is needed to improve both therapies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of two different applications of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on the reduction of postoperative acute pain after hip fracture surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 120 patients undergoing hip surgery were divided into three groups. The first group received patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with epidural fentanyl and additional medications. The second group received lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (LS-TENS) along with the same medication protocol as the first group. The third group received the same medication protocol as the first group, as well as surgical wound transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (SWTENS). Pain levels were measured using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, and the number of opioid analgesics used by each patient was recorded. VAS score and the total consumption of opioid analgesics were meticulously documented. RESULTS: VAS scores were higher in the control group than in the SW-TENS group at 30 min (1.58±2.49 vs. 0.70±2.15, p<0.05) and in the SW-TENS group than in the LS-TENS group at 24 h postoperatively (2.33±1.29 vs. 1.63±1.05, p<0.05). The 48-h total analgesic consumption level of the control group was of the LS-TENS group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that TENS application to the surgical wound, lumbar plexus, and sciatic nerve using anatomical landmarks can significantly reduce postoperative pain, as demonstrated by the higher VAS scores, higher total analgesic consumption and high additional analgesic need in the control group after hip fracture surgery. Cluster headache (CH) is one of the worst primary headaches that remain underdiagnosed and inappropriately treated. There are recent advances in the understanding of this disease and available treatments. This paper aims to review CH's recent clinical and pathophysiological findings, diagnosis, and treatment. We performed a narrative literature review on the sociodemographics, clinical presentations, pathophysiological findings, and diagnosis and treatment of CH. CH affects 0.1% of the population with an incidence of 2.07-9.8/100,00 person-years-habitants, a mean prevalence of 53/100,000 inhabitants (3-150/100,000 inhabitants). The male-to-female ratio remains inconclusive, as the ratio of 4.3:1 has recently been modified to 1.3-2.6, possibly due to previous misdiagnosis in women. Episodic presentation is the most frequent (80%). It is a polygenetic and multifactorial entity that involves dysfunction of the trigeminovascular system, the trigeminal autonomic reflex, and the hypothalamic networks. An MRI of the brain is mandatory to exclude secondary etiologies. There are effective and safe pharmacological treatments oxygen, sphenopalatine, and great occipital nerve block, with the heterogeneity of clinical trial designs for patients with CH divided into acute, transitional, or bridge treatment (prednisone) and preventive interventions. In conclusion, CH remains underdiagnosed, mainly due to a lack of awareness within the medical community, frequently causing a long delay in reaching a final diagnosis. Recent advances in understanding the principal risk factors and underlying pathophysiology exist. There are new therapeutic possibilities that are effective for CH. Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is an emerging non-invasive technique designed to stimulate branches of the vagus nerve distributed over the body surface. Studies suggest a correlation between the brain-gut-microbiota (BGM) axis and the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The BGM axis represents a complex bidirectional communication system, with the vagus nerve being a crucial component. Therefore, non-invasive electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve might have the potential to modify--most of the time probably in a non-physiological way--the signal transmission within the BGM axis, potentially influencing the progression or symptoms of AD. This review explores the interaction between percutaneous vagus nerve stimulation and the BGM axis, emphasizing its potential effects on AD. It examines various aspects, such as specific brain regions, gut microbiota composition, maintenance of intestinal environmental homeostasis, inflammatory responses, brain plasticity, and hypothalamic--pituitary--adrenal (HPA) axis regulation. The review suggests that tVNS could serve as an effective strategy to modulate the BGM axis and potentially intervene in the progression or treatment of Alzheimer's disease in the future. Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy on pain during the debonding procedure. Methods: A placebo-controlled, randomized split - mouth study was conducted on 30 orthodontic patients. The right and left anterior teeth in the maxilla and mandible were randomly allocated to the control and experimental groups (EG) and were stimulated. TENS application was made through a modified electrode probe that was used from an ammeter. The control group (CG) received the mechanical application of the device with no current, whereas the EG received progressively increasing current from 0.1 mA to the point where the patient experienced a mild tingling sensation for 60 s for each tooth. This was followed by a debonding procedure using an orthodontic debonding plier. Pain perception was recorded on a numerical rating scale after debonding each tooth. Results: The mean pain score was higher in the CG than in the EG, and the difference between the two groups was significant (p=0.001). The pain score was higher in the mandibular teeth than in the maxillary teeth, and the difference between the two groups was also significant (p=0.021). Pain score was higher in female subjects than in male subjects, and the difference between the two groups was significant (p=0.015). Conclusion: The application of TENS therapy results in pain reduction during the debonding procedure. The female subjects experienced more pain. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has proven effective in treating pain in many experimental and clinical studies. In addition to the analgesic effect, direct TENS of peripheral nerves had anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects in the treatment of distal polyneuropathy and spinal cord injury. This work demonstrates the experience of using direct TENS in the treatment of a 52-year-old patient with post-COVID-19 Guillain–Barré (GBS) and acute transverse myelitis (ATM) overlap syndrome. Direct TENS of peripheral nerves showed high efficiency in enhancing the therapeutic effect of combined plasma exchange and pharmacotherapy by 89.5% with a significant reduction in neuropathic pain, motor and sensory deficits, bladder and bowel disorders and regression of neurophysiological changes. We suggest that direct TENS of peripheral nerves can be a promising option for combined therapy of GBS and ATM overlap syndrome and other diseases with the simultaneous development of distal polyneuropathy and spinal cord injury. Patients with neurological diseases often suffer from overactive bladder. Posterior tibial nerve stimulation is mentioned in guidelines as a treatment when antimuscarinics fail or cannot be tolerated by patients, but the evidence is scant. This article summarizes the evidence on the practical aspects of tibial nerve stimulation for neurogenic overactive bladder (NOAB), such as electrical parameters and treatment duration, and identifies areas requiring further investigation. Scoping review. Literature search on PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library, including studies from 2010 to 2024 regarding tibial nerve stimulation for NOAB. Sixteen papers were considered: seven on transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), seven on percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) and two protocols. Most studies enrolled neurological and non‐neurological patients or studied non‐randomized samples of a few patients. Clinical outcomes, treatment duration, number of sessions, and follow‐up times showed considerable heterogeneity, but some practical recommendations could be drawn. For PTNS, most authors suggest using 20 Hz and 200 μs, but the amplitude is highly variable among studies. For TTNS, 10 Hz and 200 μs are suggested, with considerable variability in the number of sessions and overall treatment duration. Most papers propose similar criteria regarding the frequency and duration of the stimulation, and all of them support the efficacy of tibial nerve stimulation, except for one. Patients with chronic low back pain should have a history and physical examination to identify red flags that may indicate serious conditions that warrant immediate intervention or yellow flags (i.e., psychological, environmental, and social factors) that indicate risk of disability. The examination should include an evaluation for radicular symptoms. Routine imaging is not recommended but is indicated when red flags are present, there is a neuromuscular deficit, or if pain does not resolve with conservative therapy. Patients should avoid bed rest. Nonpharmacologic treatment is first-line management and may include therapies with varying evidence of support, such as counseling, exercise therapy, spinal manipulation, massage, heat, dry needling, acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and physical therapy. Pharmacologic interventions are second-line treatment. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the initial medication of choice; duloxetine may also be beneficial. Evidence is inconclusive to recommend the use of benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, corticosteroids, insomnia agents, anticonvulsants, cannabis, acetaminophen, or long-term opioids. Epidural corticosteroid injections are not recommended except for short-term symptom relief in patients with radicular pain. Most patients with chronic low back pain will not require surgery; evaluation for surgery may be considered in those with persistent functional disabilities and pain from progressive spinal stenosis, worsening spondylolisthesis, or herniated disk. Physicians should consider prevention of chronic low back pain when patients present with acute back pain. Consistent screening and clear communication are essential to decrease disparities in assessment of neuropathic symptoms and diagnosis. Evidence for long-term benefit and safety of first-line treatment options is lacking. Second-line drug therapy includes nortriptyline, imipramine, venlafaxine, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, topical lidocaine, and topical capsaicin. Periodic, objective monitoring of medication response is critical because patients may not obtain desired pain reduction, adverse effects are common, and serious adverse effects can occur. Effective management of labour pain is an essential aspect of care provided to women during childbirth. The aim of this study was to assess pregnant women's knowledge of using non-pharmacological pain relief methods during childbirth. Methods: This quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at four hospitals in the Tshwane District of South Africa. The sample consisted of 384 pregnant women. Results: The results show that (n = 200, 52.1%) pregnant women lack knowledge regarding non-pharmacological pain relief methods, while a minority (n = 101, 26.3%) had some knowledge, some (n = 73, 19%) were uncertain about these methods and others (n = 10, 2.6%) did not comment. Additionally, most respondents (n = 232, 60%) never received education about the various methods available to manage pain during labour at antenatal care, while others (n = 131, 34%) agreed that they received such education. A significant relationship between the level of education and knowledge about non-pharmacological pain relief methods was noted (p = 0.0082). In conclusion, respondents knew methods such as massage, breathing exercises, movements and birth positions. However, they lacked knowledge of birth companionship, acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), aromatherapy and music. In recent years, tooth wear has been a growing concern in dentistry as it has become increasingly prevalent among the population. At the same time, the development of adhesive techniques has enabled minimally invasive treatment protocols, with the goal of preserving and protecting teeth for as long as possible. This clinical report presents the case of a full-mouth rehabilitation patient with tooth wear who was treated using minimally invasive techniques. Esthetic and functional outcomes were designed and monitored using digital tools such as digital impressions, 3D facial scans, a digital tooth library, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), M RI and kinesiographic (KS) analysis throughout the treatment. To increase the vertical dimension of occlusion, instead of using traditional centric relation (CR) methods, a myocentric relation (MCR) technique was employed. This approach allowed the clinician to maintain the occlusal Class i situation, avoiding more invasive orthodontic treatment or maxillofacial surgery and resulting in reduced morbidity, treatment time, and cost for the patient. At the 1-year follow-up, good patient adaptation was shown, suggesting that the MCR concept is a viable alternative to conventional CR methods in appropriate cases. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a wearable, smartphone‐controlled, rechargeable transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) device in patients with overactive bladder (OAB). Patients and Methods: This multicentre, prospective, single‐blind, randomised clinical trial included eligible patients with OAB symptoms who were randomly assigned to the stimulation group or sham group. The primary efficacy outcome was change from baseline in voiding frequency/24 h after 4 weeks of treatment. The secondary efficacy outcomes included changes in bladder diary outcomes (urgency score/void, nocturia episodes/day, micturition volume/void, and incontinence episodes/day), questionnaires on Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS), Patient Perception of Bladder Condition (PPBC), and American Urological Association Symptom Index Quality of Life Score (AUA‐SI‐QoL) at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment. Device‐related adverse events (AEs) were also evaluated. Results: In the full analysis set (FAS), the mean (sd) change of voiding frequency/24 h in the stimulation group and sham group at 4 weeks were −3.5 (2.9) and −0.6 (2.4), respectively (P < 0.01). Similar results were obtained in the per‐protocol set (PPS): −3.5 (2.9) vs −0.4 (2.3) (P < 0.01). In the FAS and PPS, micturition volume/void significantly improved at 4 weeks (P = 0.01 and P = 0.02). PPBC improvement almost reached significance in the FAS (P = 0.05), while it was significant in the PPS (P = 0.02). In the FAS and PPS, AUA‐SI‐QoL significantly improved at 4 weeks in the two groups (P < 0.01 and P < 0.01), whereas there were no significant differences in urgency score/void, nocturia episodes/day or OABSS between the groups. Also, no device‐related serious AEs were reported. Conclusions: The non‐invasive neuromodulation technique using the novel ambulatory TTNS device is effective and safe for treating OAB. Objective: To review the effectiveness of different physical therapies for acute and sub-acute low back pain supported by evidence, and create clinical recommendations and expert consensus for physiotherapists on clinical prescriptions. Data sources: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and the Cochrane Library for studies published within the previous 15 years. Review methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials assessing patients with acute and sub-acute low back pain were included. Two reviewers independently screened relevant studies using the same inclusion criteria. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database and the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews tool were used to grade the quality assessment of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, respectively. The final recommendation grades were based on the consensus discussion results of the Delphi of 22 international experts. Results: Twenty-one systematic reviews and 21 randomized controlled trials were included. Spinal manipulative therapy and low-level laser therapy are recommended for acute low back pain. Core stability exercise/motor control, spinal manipulative therapy, and massage can be used to treat sub-acute low back pain. Conclusions: The consensus statements provided medical staff with appliable recommendations of physical therapy for acute and sub-acute low back pain. It is a well-established fact that post-stroke depression (PSD) is a prevalent condition that affects a significant proportion of individuals who have suffered a stroke. Hence, our research endeavors to explore the safety, efficacy and the potential molecular mechanism of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (ta-VNS) for the treatment of depression in PSD patients by conducting a double-blind, sham-controlled, randomized trial. Patients who had experienced strokes and exhibited depressive symptoms, with a Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) score of ≥8 and met the DSM-IV criteria, were diagnosed with PSD. A volunteer sample of participants (N = 80) were randomly divided into either the ta-VNS group (which received ta-VNS in addition to conventional treatment) or the control group (which received conventional treatment only), in a 1:1 ratio. The effectiveness of the interventions was evaluated using the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Barthel Index (BI) scores. Furthermore, Plasma BDNF, CREB1, and 5-HT levels were measured before and after treatment. The concomitant application of ta-VNS demonstrated a remarkable reduction in HAMD-17 and SDS scores, leading to noteworthy enhancements in patients' daily functioning, as evidenced by improved activities of daily living, at all assessed time points, in contrast to the control group (p < 0.0001). Notably, the ta-VNS group exhibited superior effects in modulating the measured neurotrophic biomarkers when compared to the control group (p < 0.05).
